Fields of Mistria starts us off as an adventurer looking to start a farm using the offer of free land. There, we find out that a recent earthquake has left the town needing help and it’s our job to revitalize it.
This game is without a doubt going to become one of my favorites. The aesthetic reminds me of my childhood spent playing Harvest Moon on the Gameboy Advance and the art style is reminiscent of older anime like Sailor Moon. Both of these work together to give the game a nostalgic and retro feel with the modernization of newer mechanics.
The cast of characters are all wonderful and unique, making me want to befriend each one. The dialogue is entertaining and varied, with characters even commenting on recent events all the way to items donated to the museum. They also interact with one another and have conversations, making them feel much more interconnected.
The gameplay contains both the standard fare for farming sims but the added mechanic of magic and skill point allocation keeps the formula fresh. The skill points are easy to obtain and use, and the skills you can unlock with them are immensely useful. On top of that, the magic system is beneficial during gameplay. You can learn spells to regain stamina and health, or even summon some rain to water your crops. There is also an animal breeding mechanic allowing you to breed unique colored animals which I have yet to see a farm sim do to this extent.
Do I Recommend It?
Yes! It may currently be in early access but this game is already well worth the money. There is already plenty of content to explore, so don't be daunted by the Early Access status. Plus, by purchasing the game and playing, you can help support the developers while getting to play an awesome game. It’s a win-win!
